I think the only thing keeping me from really liking this a lot more is the production. The vocals can seem a bit monotone after a while. Unfortunately, it drives me nuts. It's very clever, really. There are some weak points in the song writing, and I wouldnt say that they are very original.
No, seriously. Listen, I know these guys were going for the "raw" live, or classic rock feel. Because noone has ever attempted to do that. Same goes for the guitars. Took a few listens for this album to grab me.
I still like them, but without much range, I can't see these guys keeping things too interesting to make very many memorable albums, but hey mastodon can pull it off. It is cool to hear another band embracing some black-sabbath like music. What do ya say fellas. My hat goes off to this producer.
It makes it hard to listen to this when you feel like your listening to some garage band on a tape recorder. Nothing too mind blowing. Im new to the sword. I guess. In all honesty, there are a handful of songs on here that truly rock, and a handful that dont interest me. so who knows. release a live album, and your studio album. This is a good record to either download, or find for $5 in the discount bin.
I get that. Dont know if I would spend the usual $15 or whatever these people think a plastic disc is worth these days. If you want to have your record sound like a live album. let's maybe use some of the great technologies developed, even in the last 20 years, and make a studio album. Pretty boring. Enjoy.
I loved The Sword's first album. And for Amazon's current price of $5 for high-quality, non-DRM MP3s. This one continues along the same vein - no huge surprises here musically. However, this album is obviously more mature, complex, better-recorded and -played - and comes with gobs and gobs of osmium-heavy layered, crunching chords. how can you go wrong. You might just discover one of the best new metal bands to come along in years.
Love it. These guys rock. Sabbath meets, pre-Black Album Metallica with lryics inspired by Robert E. Howard, DnD and who knows what else. So great to hear new, good metal. I'm so sick of all this stuff out now with "cookie monster" vocals - I'm so glad to have found The Sword.
The Sword defy any serious, considered analysis. Anyway, it rocks like all hell. I do, almost without exception. The songwriting centers almost entirely on the series of riffs and Sabbath style melodies and harmonies. If you think that rules, you will likely think it all rules. They're sometimes bluesy, sometimes more purely metallic and driving. They are a straight up, pounding doom/stoner throwback group with a bit of thrashy intensity thrown in. From beginning to end.Either you think the riffs rock or you don't.
The vox are a limited, thin croak (though with a surprising number of hooks thrown in) and the drumwork is pure thunder. There's nothing original here nor anything especially sophisticated, though they do display some subtle dynamics. Listen to "Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians," the finest track here, and one of the most pure headbangers in recent memory. If so, check it out.
very cool. many metal influences to be found on this cd. very sabbathy- one friend thought it slightly redundant, they're opening for mettalica what else do you need to know.
